Fun Facts: Christopher Cannon, a well known wine importer (based in Bordeaux at the time) discovered the value of Priorat in 1983. He was gifted a bottle of vintage Priorat and was so inspired he later introduced this wine region to a U.S. based wine critic which helped to catapult the Catalonia wine growing area around the world. In the 1990’s the Cannon family purchased a fig and olive tree orchard (named Clos Figueras) with rich black lava-rock laden soils. With this purchase they were given advice that their unique terroir could support certain grape varietals. So, while they were visiting the Rhône Valley to acquire new vines they enlisted the guidance of Rhône Valley’s famed Alain Graillot. They ended up planting classic Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Syrah and Viognier along with Priorat’s noble grapes, Grenache and Carignan.
